Q. What's
the most serious difficulty Dr ger
Medical
encountered during the past 10 years in China? How did you deal
with it?
Mr. Frahm: The most serious difficulties, which are
still quite fresh in all our memories, were caused by SARS last
year in May and June 2003. For me personally it was an emotional
up and down time between enthusiasm about the motivation of
our Sales and Service staff to help our customers and on the
other hand the fear about the possibility that one of our staff
could get infected during on installation or service operation
in the ICU. In summary, all of our staff got along without any
serious problems, but some of our customers, like ICU physicians,
got infected and did not survive the infection.
Q. What's
your management style and concept? And: Do you have any experience
in leading and managing the Dr ger
Medical
team?
Mr. Frahm: As mentioned in the beginning, one of
the main strengths of Dr ger
Medical is excellent and motivated employees. I have personally
experienced this culture in the company for many years and it
is one of my main tasks here in China to implement the corporate
values in our local organization. Personal management style
and concept may have to do with individual taste, but the main
direction is implemented quite well in the corporate culture
from top down to the bottom. I personally treat the Management
Team and the staff here in China no different from the way I
do it back in Germany, although the style needs to be adjusted
slightly sometimes in the context of the specific situation.
My main task and challenge is to balance the need to create
the room for the talented employees to have their own experiences
and the need to coach and sometimes correct the direction and
to optimize this balance under consideration of the short-term
and long-term objectives.
People are the main success factor everywhere in the world and
the basic rules and values about leadership and management seem
to follow a global 'human' concept. However, if you move into
the details on national level, you will identify a lot of minor
differences. Independent of cultural differences, we want to
establish long-term relationships with our customers and this
also requires long-term relationships with our employees, who
need to grow in a dynamically changing competitive environment
in a dynamically growing market environment in China. This is
the main challenge for Management to create a stable environment:
on one hand to grow the people and the business, and on the
other hand to master the challenges of change.
